Virtua Fighter Crossroads Presentation Recap

Sega's new Virtua Fighter Crossroads introduces a full single-player campaign for the first time in series history, blending adventure and fighting game elements in a Southeast Asian city, alongside the classic VS Battle mode.

Among the many things Sega has been working on in recent years is bringing back quite a few of its classic titles to the forefront, and while we have plenty to wonder about regarding Crazy Taxi, there was little to discuss about Virtua Fighter while the new game was being developed by RGG Studio until now. The game's full trailer was officially presented during the Summer Game Fest event Friday night, but shortly after Geoff's presentation, we got a slightly more complete showcase of the game during Sega's presentation. Here's what was shown to us during the Virtua Fighter Crossroads stream.

Let's start with the first significant thing we're getting, which is that Virtua Fighter 6 receives an official title and it's Crossroads, and not only that, we start with a showcase of new characters, Cielo Salinas and Stella Bridge, and for the first time in the series' history, we're getting single-player content in the form of a campaign. According to what the developers say, the campaign will naturally blend adventure elements with fighting game mechanics. During this presentation we saw very little of how this will work, but we didn't see enough to know how naturally these transitions happen. For now, only imagination will tell us if this really works excellently, but the developers emphasize, as befits the Virtua Fighter series, that they place strong emphasis on realism and innovation.

The game takes place in Vilasapara, located in Southeast Asia, and according to the developers, it's a place where fighting is part of everyday life. The project's producer, Riichiro Yamada, who comes with the experience of Yakuza games, talks about the studio's experience with open worlds full of life and how they're using this knowledge to build a world for the Virtua Fighter Crossroads campaign. It seems that considerable attention was given to the city in order to turn the campaign into a unique action-adventure game not yet seen in the genre, which has been dubbed Crossroads-Style Adventure.

The next thing showcased was the combat system that transitions from exploration into fighting mode that works like a 3D fighting game. According to the developers, they wanted to achieve a state where there's a complete integration between Virtua Fighter's combat system and an action-adventure game, and in the presentation you can see the switching between the two alongside a relatively short showcase of the moves Cielo has in the game against what appear to be regular enemies. The big difference is that here, instead of battles being only 1 on 1, there are also battles of our character against multiple enemies, something we've seen in 2.5D games like Street Fighter 6, but not in a 3D fighting game. Currently the gameplay looks interesting but we'll need to see how it feels when we get to try the game ourselves.

The game's story will focus on 4 completely new characters, two of which are Cielo Salinas and Stella Bridge that we already mentioned, and two more characters that haven't been revealed yet. The player will play all of them and although their goals won't necessarily be the same goals, their paths will always cross, all as part of the "Crossroad-Style" they built for the campaign. Immediately after, we get a fuller and longer trailer than the one shown at Summer Game Fest, with a length of almost 9 and a half minutes, and at the end we see Pai Chan as a returning character who will appear in the campaign. During the presentation we also saw Akira Yuki, Wolf Hawkfield (who was already shown in another trailer about a year ago), and similar to the mechanics showcase less than a year ago, you can also see Sara Bryant in some of the developers' tests.

Finally, as a real treat for those who waited, we get a glimpse at the VS Battle mode, which will likely serve as the main reason for purchasing the game for many players. The mode will be available from the first moment for those who buy the game, and we also get a glimpse at various battles between Cielo and other characters like Pai and Wolf, along with a specially stylized character select screen that shows us Stella and Cielo. And if the select screen will only serve the game's full character cast, it can be deduced that the game will have about 16 characters available at launch along with the new characters. The combat system itself isn't particularly complicated and is completely identical to the controls in the old games—we have 3 buttons for punch, kick, and guard. According to the developers, this is a series that could be easily enjoyed in the past, and that's a feeling they wanted to preserve in the new game for new players as well as older players who are already familiar with the series. At the same time, they add that the combat system received additional polish, so it can feel as if they worked on it from scratch.

Here the presentation comes to an end. The developers talk a bit about how the game is not a nostalgia trick for older players but rather a game that presents the Virtua Fighter series reborn and adapting itself also to audiences interested only in a single-player adventure game, so the game will suit many new audiences including the old ones. I have to admit that personally the trailer during Summer Game Fest managed to confuse me a bit, but after I saw this presentation and invested a bit more in what the developers have to say, officially this is one of my most anticipated games for 2027. Until we get an official release date with a showcase of more returning characters, what do you think about the presentation? Are you also eagerly anticipating the game?
