Subnautica 2's Early Access Is a Dizzying Success
Subnautica 2's early access launch was a massive success, surpassing 650,000 concurrent players across all platforms and selling over two million copies in just 12 hours.
Last weekend, Subnautica 2's early access finally launched, and to say it was a success would be an understatement. Shortly after becoming available, the game crossed the 400,000 concurrent players mark on Steam alone, with the studio announcing that the game reached 650,000 concurrent players when accounting for players on Epic Game Store and Game Pass as well. And the player count wasn't the game's only achievement—it also sold over two million copies within just 12 hours. For comparison, Pragmata, one of the year's biggest titles, sold "only" about a million copies in two days.
But the studio capitalized on this wave of momentum and success by releasing a roadmap for the game's upcoming updates. While we didn't get a timeframe for when each update will release, we can see that the next early access update will be a quality of life (QoL) update focusing on the Biomods system, encounters with Blight, vehicle parking, along with several small additions like the ability to run. The update after that, update 1.2, will focus on improvements to co-op as well as the base-building tool and cosmetic customization. Unknown Worlds revealed that in subsequent updates we can expect an expansion of the world with new environments, resources, creatures, tools, and vehicles. It looks like the game is heading toward a promising future with plenty of things to look forward to, and the fun has only just begun.
