Star Wars Eclipse's Development Is Reportedly "very slow going"
A new report paints a bleak picture for Quantic Dream's Star Wars project
When Quantic Dream revealed Star Wars Eclipse at The Game Awards 2021 with a slick CGI trailer, it was one of the more surprising announcements in recent memory - the studio behind Detroit: Become Human and Heavy Rain taking a swing at a high-concept action-adventure set in the High Republic era. Four-plus years later, the picture looks considerably less exciting. According to sources speaking with Insider Gaming, development on the project is described as "very slow going" - with the team making "very little progress over months."
The report clarifies that a substantial portion of the game is already built. This isn't a project stuck in early concept limbo. But the remaining work is advancing at a pace that has insiders characterizing it as years away from completion. Parent company NetEase - which acquired Quantic Dream back in 2022 - has declined to expand the development team. Instead, they appear to be in a holding pattern, waiting to assess their long-term strategy before committing further resources to the project.
The uncomfortable detail in the report is what Eclipse is financially depending on right now: Spellcasters Chronicles, a Quantic Dream Early Access title, is currently the revenue lifeline keeping development funded. If that game underperforms commercially, Insider Gaming's sources suggest NetEase may reassess its commitment to Eclipse altogether. Neither NetEase nor Quantic Dream responded to requests for comment.

The situation is a familiar one in this industry - a creatively ambitious project held hostage by corporate financial calculus rather than any problem with the game itself. Quantic Dream has the talent and the license. What they apparently don't have is a parent company willing to back them fully. Star Wars Eclipse could still be something remarkable. Right now, it's in a waiting room.
