Sony Closes Dark Outlaws Games Studio and Lays Off Employees

Sony has reportedly shut down its Los Angeles-based Dark Outlaws Games studio, which was established just a year ago in March 2025, affecting around 50 employees as part of broader planned cutbacks.

While Epic Games managed to capture most of the headlines across the web with its announcement of a massive wave of layoffs affecting around 1,000 employees, making Fortnite's future look a bit less rosy than it appeared just days ago, it seems Sony has also experienced cutbacks. It was announced that one of its studios, the Los Angeles-based Dark Outlaws Games, which was established just about a year ago in March 2025 under the leadership of Jason Blundell, a former Call of Duty director who previously headed the company's Deviation studio, which also closed in 2024.

As of now, official confirmation regarding the studio's closure has not yet been received from Sony itself or from Dark Outlaw Games, but this appears to be part of a broader wave of cutbacks planned to reach other studios as well, and will include, among other things, a shift away from mobile platform development going forward, at least according to the original report from Bloomberg. The current layoffs involve around 50 affected employees, and although this is a significantly lower number than the wave Epic suffered, it's difficult to estimate how many more people will be laid off down the line.
