Resident Evil Creator's Studio Acquired by Shift Up
In a surprising collaboration, Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami has partnered with Shift Up to work on his next game, as his studio Unbound has been acquired by the Stellar Blade developer.
With all the nonsense that circulated online for April Fools' Day, one post nearly slipped under everyone's radar, but it appears a genuine collaboration was formed yesterday and it's quite surprising. Not long ago we saw headlines about how Shinji Mikami, creator of the Resident Evil series who left Tango Gameworks in 2023 (which was nearly shut down during Microsoft's layoffs), subsequently founded Unbound, a new studio that hasn't released a single game yet, and has now been acquired by none other than Shift Up, the creators of Stellar Blade and Goddess of Victory: Nikke.
The post, which admittedly was shared on one of the more suspicious days for news, was published on the page of Kim Hyung Tae, CEO of Shift Up who, according to previous reports, is making the transition from studio to self-publisher, and is now presenting a first and particularly interesting acquisition in the form of Mikami's studio. In the video you can see Unbound studio with what appears to be quite a bit of strange CGI in various places like the background and the equipment the developers are using, which could hint at the game currently in development, though it's not exactly clear at the moment what game this is.
The video itself is not translated to English beyond the names of the speakers. If you're interested in reading the full text of what was said, I recommend reading the transcript published by Gematsu right here.
