One of the Dragon Age Series Creators Sees No Future for the Franchise
Former Dragon Age lead writer David Gaider stated in a PCGamer interview that he doesn't see a future for the series under EA, citing that projects were constantly on the verge of cancellation during development.
Dragon Age the Veilguard was a highly anticipated game for many years by numerous fans of the series. BioWare was once EA's crown jewel, and after the studio ran into trouble in recent years, we often heard about the BioWare Magic that was supposed to save them following the disappointing launch of Anthem. To the disappointment of many of us, the game released to particularly lukewarm reviews along with an especially cold reception from the game's fanbase after a controversial promotional campaign that only hurt the game. Its disappointing sales led to support ending relatively quickly, and the future of the series is now a major question mark. Now David Gaider, the former lead writer and one of the creators of Dragon Age, says he doesn't see a future for the series under EA.
During an interview with PCGamer, David Gaider said he doesn't see a future for Dragon Age, stating "Under EA? Very unlikely. Throughout the entire development process when I was still there, we were constantly one wrong breath away from project cancellation. We kept releasing games, and they sold much better than they expected, and it continued to surprise them." He then added, "If, through some alignment of the stars, someone gave me the reins to the series back and said 'bring this child back to life,' it would be complicated, but I think I'd be interested in taking on that mission. To return to the basics of what made Dragon Age a beloved series in the first place. And go for something dark and dangerous, and do things that would make people angry (presumably at the characters). I think that's something I'd want to do."
When Gaider was asked if he played The Veilguard, he replied that the chances of him touching the game are very low. "Whether the game was successful or not, without a doubt they (the development team) made different choices than I would have made. The team took the series and decided to put out their own version, and I don't want to see the series change. It's definitely selfish, I'm just not interested in seeing what they did with my child, for better or worse." BioWare's future currently depends on the next game in the Mass Effect series that is now in development. We saw a single teaser trailer from it about 5 years ago and it's unclear what the status of its development is right now, but we can only hope it receives a warm reception. Until then, what do you think about this? Did you play Dragon Age The Veilguard? Would you want a new Dragon Age game written by Gaider? Feel free to share with us in the comments!
