New Update for Mindseye Adds Multiplayer Mode to the Game, But It's Not What You Think
Update 8 brings a multiplayer mode called Grenade Football and numerous improvements to Mindseye, though the game struggles with only 39 concurrent players on Steam.
After a catastrophic launch, disappointing sales, and losing its publishing deal with IO Interactive, studio Build a Rocket Boy isn't giving up on MindsEye, the game that will be remembered as "the one that tried to compete with GTA and failed spectacularly." It was a commendable attempt, if not for the series of layoffs that hit the studio, conspiracy theories voiced by management, and a game that ultimately launched half-baked with promises that were far too grand. Meanwhile, the game itself continues to receive updates, and the latest one doesn't skimp on content, even if not all of it is desirable.
Update 8, described by the developer as "one of the biggest yet," introduces an element the game was missing at launch: multiplayer. But no, it's not what you think. At the center of the new multiplayer mode is a team-based mode called Grenade Football. In practice, it's essentially Rocket League without the cars - where players are divided into teams and run around a field trying to pass a grenade through grenade launchers into the opposing team's goal. There's also the interesting question of "who is this even for?" As of this writing, MindsEye recorded a peak of 39 concurrent players in the last 24 hours according to SteamDB. That's probably enough for one or two matches, barely. Anyone wanting to try it should hurry.
Beyond multiplayer, the update also adds additional racing tracks, social features meant to encourage interaction between players, and much-needed improvements to the single-player campaign, including improved enemy physics during explosions, difficulty tuning in missions, extensive overhaul of AI navigation and behavior, better vehicle control, and smoother animation transitions between movement, combat, and interactions.
So yes, MindsEye's launch was unforgivable, but there's really no reason to oppose the attempt to fix it. In our opinion, that ship has already sailed, and people won't bother coming back to it or trying it after all the mess that happened. What do you think about the new update? Tell us in the comments!
