Netflix's Live-Action Assassin's Creed Is Set in Ancient Rome
Ubisoft and Netflix have locked in the setting and cast for the live-action AC adaptation: 64 AD, the Great Fire of Rome, and Nero's reign. Here's what we know.
After years of near-misses, false starts, and the 2016 film nobody wants to remember, Assassin's Creed is getting another shot at live-action,
Ubisoft and Netflix have confirmed that the upcoming live-action Assassin's Creed series is set in 64 AD Rome, during the Great Fire of Nero's reign — one of antiquity's most chaotic and politically charged moments.
The ancient Roman setting is a notable choice. The games have visited Egypt, Greece, and multiple other ancient Mediterranean civilisations, but Rome during Nero's rule — a period defined by political paranoia, public spectacle, and violent intrigue — offers exactly the kind of backdrop the franchise thrives on.
The 2016 Michael Fassbender film demonstrated that Assassin's Creed's core premise is difficult to adapt without losing what makes it compelling. Netflix's serial format gives the story room to breathe, build characters, and earn its historical stakes rather than compressing everything into two hours. Whether the execution matches the premise is still an open question, but the setting is a strong start.
No release window has been announced. More casting and character details are expected in the coming months.
