Impressions from the Fable Demo at Gamescom 2026!

The Fable demo showcased at Gamescom reveals a living, breathing Bowerstone with over 130 enterable buildings, mockumentary-style cutscenes inspired by The Office, and an impressive combat system that blends magic and weapons.

Oh Fable, how much we needed you

Fable has the perfect recipe to disappoint me. I don't think I've ever anticipated a game as much as I'm anticipating this one, and with every bit of information that leaks from it, I know it'll be very difficult if not impossible to completely surprise me by the time it releases — at least that's what I thought before we saw the gameplay this morning that's now available to everyone.

The video shows how the game treats Albion's capital city, Bowerstone, which contains over 130 buildings you can enter — including a tattoo shop. The city looks alive, feels amazing, and captures the feeling you've all hoped a medieval game would have. The vibe from the trailers released so far has been that Shrek is about to pop up at any second, and that feeling exists here too. The demo shows a city-focused quest where you'll need to return the keys to the Heroes Guild — which is run by a former hero turned alcoholic. Meeting him shows us for the first time what they've been talking about from the very beginning — that all the cutscenes in the game will be in a mockumentary style like The Office.

We see how the scene shifts from the regular situation to talking heads — those parts where characters speak to the camera as if it's an interview. Then we also see touches of humor in interactions with people in the world — which is open to us like it was in Red Dead Redemption 2, for example. It seems the game is really aiming to copy Rockstar's open-world mechanics for a medieval setting, and so far it's doing an outstanding job. Finally, the combat system was shown to us, which promises to blend magic and weapons like The Witcher 3 succeeded in doing. So far it looks very impressive, with a beautiful display of how enemies react to pressure from our bow and arrow. If you shoot someone in the head they'll fall backward in a hilariously funny way, and if you shoot them in the leg they'll start limping.

Fable arrives on February 23, 2027, and rest assured — both you readers on the site and the other writers here — that I'll review it beforehand and make sure all news about it appears here too.
