Hideo Kojima Reveals in Interview That Sony Deal Was Canceled in a Zoom Call
Hideo Kojima discusses the cancellation of Sony's publishing deal for Physint and the subsequent partnership with Xbox, revealing the deal was terminated during a Zoom call in mid-June.
The news about Sony canceling the publishing of Physint and signing with Xbox instead is no longer new. Since the details were published, we've already received information about the reasons that led Sony to abandon the deal (although the studio rejects them and urges players not to believe everything that's written), as well as Kojima's appearance at Xbox's event at the Tokyo Game Show, where we also got a reveal of the cast of actors that were recruited and a presentation of one of the game's posters.
Now in an interview with the Washington Post, we're discovering more details about what happened and is still happening behind the scenes of Physint. One of the main things revealed in this interview is that the announcement of the deal cancellation between Sony and Kojima was made in a Zoom call that took place in mid-June. Kojima said: "I was shocked and surprised. I wasn't angry or sad, I just thought, 'What do I need to do?' It was a big problem for us and I couldn't tell the team at that time." In another interview with IGN, Kojima revealed that he still hasn't decided which game engine Physint will use and whether he'll replace Decima with another engine after developing two Death Stranding games on it. "After we decided to work with Xbox, they said they would give us a lot of technological support. When I went to visit them, there were so many labs there. They were experimenting with so many completely new things, cutting-edge technology. I was surprised and I want to use all this new technology. Anything I can use, I want to use. I'm looking forward to working together with Xbox, but I really haven't decided about the engine yet."

Alongside the choice of which game engine to use, there's the possibility that the split from Sony will also affect the platforms the game will launch on. It's likely that Xbox's support for the game came with a requirement that it be an exclusive title for the Xbox console (alongside PC, presumably). While this information hasn't been officially confirmed yet, it could be part of the new publishing agreement. According to Kojima, the decision ultimately lies with Xbox, as he said: "I don't want to answer that, it's a question for Xbox. I don't know for sure. In previous updates from Xbox, I got the impression that they want to reach as many players as possible, regardless of platform. I assume all these details will be announced at a later date. Right now I'm still not sure and can't really say." It seems the story of Physint going on behind the scenes is complicated, and all we have left is to wait patiently for more information about it.
