Hackers Breach Rockstar and Threaten to Leak Data If They Don't Receive Payment

Hacker group ShinyHunters claims to have breached Rockstar's servers and is demanding a ransom payment by April 14th, though Rockstar states only limited non-essential data was accessed.

About three and a half years ago, we told you about a massive leak of early content from GTA VI that came following a breach of Rockstar's servers. Apart from rumors, at that time we had no official announcement about GTA VI, and the leak of the game including key details about it was undoubtedly extraordinary, with the person behind the breach demanding direct contact with Rockstar in order to receive a ransom payment. Now it appears that Rockstar is facing a similar situation with another breach that has occurred.

Yesterday, a hacker group called ShinyHunters announced that it breached Rockstar's servers through cloud provider Snowflake and claims to have gotten its hands on sensitive company information, apparently through the analytics services that Anodot provides to Rockstar. The group announced that it is demanding a ransom payment from Rockstar, and if it is not made by April 14th, the data in their possession will be leaked online. Rockstar, for its part, confirmed that the breach did indeed occur and that the hackers have access to a limited amount of non-essential information from a third-party database, emphasizing that this has no impact on the company, players, or on GTA Online or GTA VI itself. While it's not exactly clear what access the hacker group obtained, estimates suggest access to documents related to the company itself and various marketing materials, rather than access to player information, files, or the code of any of the games. One interesting detail worth noting is the access to marketing materials—if this is indeed true, it's possible the hackers did obtain access to a new trailer for the game, which rumors claim is expected to be released soon. Either way, it seems the time until the ultimatum is approaching, but as we know Rockstar, it's likely that the company will not pay the ransom and will try to manage the crisis if and when it comes.
