Ed Boon Confirms Another Mortal Kombat Game in Development
NetherRealm's Ed Boon confirms another Mortal Kombat is coming, while Injustice 3 rumors continue to swirl around the studio's next project.
Ed Boon just confirmed NetherRealm has another Mortal Kombat in the works. Separately, rumors keep pointing to Injustice 3 as the studio's next announcement.
Boon, currently promoting the Mortal Kombat 2 movie, revealed in September 2024 that the studio decided on its next game back in 2021. At the time, he said NetherRealm was "still fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come." Eight months later, Warner Bros. Games pulled the plug on new DLC characters and story chapters, sparking community backlash.
NetherRealm has been silent since then. Now Boon gave Collider a hint at what's next.
"We're definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we're definitely doing more, as well, so there are a lot of parts on the stove, not just with games, though, with other forms of media and whatnot," he said. "So, we've got a lot of great announcements that are coming."
Mortal Kombat 1 sold 8 million copies since its 2023 launch—just over half the 15 million copies Mortal Kombat 11 moved as of 2022. This new Mortal Kombat could arrive after Injustice 3. Injustice: Gods Among Us launched in 2013, Injustice 2 followed in 2017. NetherRealm dropped Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019, and it looked like the studio would alternate between franchises. Instead, it released the soft reboot Mortal Kombat 1 in 2023. A new Injustice is overdue—either this year or next.
The big question: How will NetherRealm pivot after the divisive Mortal Kombat 1? Will Kameo Fighters return or get scrapped? Will the story continue from Mortal Kombat 1, or hit reset again? And will the next game actually be called Mortal Kombat 2, making the naming convention even messier?
