Crimson Desert Development for Nintendo Switch 2 is Progressing as Planned
Pearl Abyss CEO confirms that Crimson Desert is in early development for the Nintendo Switch 2, with basic gameplay currently functional, though an official release date has not been announced.
Heo Jin-young, CEO of Pearl Abyss, mentioned during an investor call that the company's highly anticipated game, Crimson Desert, is currently in development for the Nintendo Switch 2. According to Jin-young, the dedicated port of the game for Nintendo's hybrid console is at a developmental stage where "basic gameplay exists."
The fact that there's active, official discussion from Pearl Abyss executives regarding a Switch 2 version of Crimson Desert is quite interesting, especially since we already know this is one of the most graphically demanding games we've encountered in recent years. This directly raises the question of how this game will be able to deliver smooth performance—or at least good enough performance—when playing on the Switch 2. The game's developer noted that work on the port is progressing at a slow and measured pace, with developers investing their time in important optimization work to ensure its quality. All of this also means that a possible release date for the Switch 2 version of Crimson Desert is currently unknown.
For those less familiar with the game, Crimson Desert launched this past March after many long years as one of the most talked-about and anticipated games (obviously not more than GTA VI, but still). Reviews of the game were fairly positive from critics and players (though quite a few of them are less fond of the final product), and sales figures were also very impressive for the game, which sold around 6 million copies within 83 days after its launch. Pearl Abyss continues to update and improve the game regularly, fixing bugs and adding additional content based on player feedback.
