Around 50% of id Software's Employees Were Laid Off in Recent Wave

A senior programmer who worked at id Software for over 20 years revealed that approximately 50% of the studio was let go in the latest round of Xbox layoffs, drastically impacting the legendary FPS developer.

As time goes on, the full scope of the latest layoff wave hitting Xbox continues to be revealed. We know the company will lay off around 3,200 employees in the current wave, with 1,600 already let go alongside 4 studios already confirmed to be splitting from the company. But along with this relatively general information, we don't know exactly which studios were affected and in what way. Now we're getting more information about the state of id Software following the latest wave.

In a LinkedIn post published by Michael Maynard, a senior programmer who worked at id Software for over 20 years, he wrote: "Yes, I was part of the team (about 50% of the company) that was laid off today. (I was there for over 20 years! Through the time of RAGE and DOOM: The Dark Ages). Sad but, I've been doing this (games) for over 40 years so, it's not a huge surprise for me. I'm really sad that Id Software, the pioneer of action-FPS games has been pushed into yet another 'reorganization' of assets." id Software's size was estimated at around 150 employees in recent years, and cutting roughly 50% of the workforce is certainly a severe blow to the studio, though it should be said that it's not a death sentence as the studio will need to undergo new reorganization and refocusing processes to continue with the updated employee roster. The Revelations expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages launched yesterday, and as of now it's unknown what the studio's next project is, but whatever it may be, it appears that timelines for it will need to be updated given the major changes to the studio's manpower.
