After Wave of Layoffs: Report Claims New DOOM Is in Development

Despite losing around 50% of its workforce in Xbox layoffs, id Software is reportedly working on a new DOOM game in early development stages, according to Tom Warren.

The recent period has been quite a rollercoaster for id Software, with approximately 50% of the studio's workforce laid off as part of Xbox's major round of cuts, forcing the studio to change the way it operates. On the other hand, the studio released the Revelations expansion for DOOM: The Dark Ages, which is simply excellent and receiving universal praise. The extensive layoffs and the fact that the studio currently has no major project (at least that we know of) in development led to speculation and rumors that Xbox had turned id into a support studio that would assist other studios' games going forward.

A new report coming in recent days from Tom Warren, who has an extremely impressive track record and credibility, reveals that not only has id not become a support studio, but the company is now working on a new game in the DOOM series. Currently, no additional details about the game are known beyond the statement that it's in its early development stages, which means it will be several more years before we even see anything from it officially. But despite that, the news is encouraging and it's good to know that id Software will continue doing what they do best, which is letting us mow down demons from hell.
